Introduction to the School of Political Science and Public Administration / School of National Security


The School of Political Science and Public Administration at Guangxi Minzu University was established in March 2016, with the National Security School following in 2025. Its origins can be traced back to the Department of Politics of the former Guangxi Institute for Nationalities, one of its first three departments. It has undergone several name changes throughout its history, known as the Department of Political Economy, the Department of Politics and Economy, the Department of Politics and Law, School of Politics and Law, School of Political Science and International Relations, and finally the School of Political Science and Public Administration. It also emerged the School of Management, the School of business, and the School of Law. In September 2025, the National Security School was established at Guangxi Minzu University, which shares administrative offices with the School of Political Science and Public Administration under a “one team, two names” framework. Since the 1960s, the school has produced over 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students cultivating a large number of government officials and management professionals for society.

The School currently offers Master's programs in two disciplines: Political Science and Public Administration. Within Political Science, there are four secondary master's programs: Political Theory, Chinese and Foreign Political Systems, National Security Governance, and International Relations. Political Science was recognized as a Key Characteristic Discipline of the ethnic colleges in Guangxi in 2018 and further to be recognized as a Key Discipline under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission in 2019. The primary discipline of Public Administration comprises four master's programs in secondary disciplines: Administrative Management, Social Security, Border Governance and National Security, Public Administration in Ethnic Regions, and the authorized master's program in Public Administration (MPA). In October 2016, the school added a doctoral program in Public Administration in Ethnic Regions under the primary discipline of Ethnology. At the undergraduate level, the school offers three programs: Political Science and Administration, International Affairs and International Relations, and Public Administration. The Political Science program has consistently garnered recognition for its academic quality. It was designated as a High-Quality Program at Guangxi Minzu University in 2012, followed by recognition as a Characteristic Program of Guangxi Universities in 2015, and ultimately named a First-Class Undergraduate Program by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2019. The program's standing was further affirmed in 2020, when both the Political Science and Administration and the Administrative Management programs were selected as the National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites.

The school is supported by a highly qualified faculty team. Currently, it has 56 faculty and staff members, of whom 44 are full-time teachers. Among the full-time faculty, there are 11 professors, 17 associate professors, and 5 doctoral supervisors. 42 faculty members hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 97.7% of the full-time teaching staffs. The faculty has produced substantial achievements in both teaching and research. In recent years, they have secured 15 National Social Science Fund projects and 1 National Natural Science Fund project, 45 research projects at the provincial/ministerial level, and 30 projects at the departmental/bureau level. The faculty's scholarly contributions include 35 published academic books and over 400 research papers, more than 160 of which are indexed in domestic and international authoritative journals. They have received 28 awards for outstanding research achievements at the provincial/ministerial level or above.

The school has established a multi-level, high-standard research platform system. Key components of this system include the State Ethnic Affairs Commission's ‘Belt and Road’ Country and Region Research Center, the Research Center for ASEAN Political Culture and Public Governance, the Guangxi Academy of Border Governance, the Research Center for Public Security Governance in Border Ethnic Regions, and the Guangxi Academy of Urban Governance and Development. These platforms—ranging from provincial and ministerial to university levels—focus on addressing major national strategies and regional development needs, providing crucial support for interdisciplinary innovation and local development services. Building on this foundation, the school is actively integrating resources to develop a distinctive National Security School, aiming to establish a high-end think tank and talent training base dedicated to border governance, ethnic unity, regional security, and cooperation with ASEAN.

The school comprehensively implements the educational principles of the Communist Party of China and upholds the university motto, “Virtue And Knowledge, Harmony But Not Uniformity”. It closely Aligned with the university's defining characteristics of being “Ethnic, Regional, and International”, it is dedicated to building the School of Political Science and Public Administration / the National Security School into a leading talent cultivation hub—distinguished within the region, among universities for nationalities, and with a reputation in Southeast Asia. The school is dedicated to proactively cultivating high-quality ethnic cadres, management professionals, and national security specialists to serve the socioeconomic development of ethnic regions, advance the modernization of the national governance system and capacity, and support implementation of national security strategies. These graduates are characterized by a clear political orientation, reliable political quality, and solid professional expertise. They are cultivated to be “willing to serve at the grassroots, capable of advancing to higher roles, practically skilled, and trustworthy”, embodying a well-rounded development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education.
