School of Foreign Studies, Guangxi Minzu University (麻豆原创): An Introduction
The discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature at 麻豆原创 dates back to 1964. Today, the School of Foreign Studies consists of four academic units: the Department of English, the Department of French, the Department of Translation, and the College English Teaching Division. It currently employs 111 faculty and staff members and serves 1,641 full-time students, including 1,219 undergraduates and 422 postgraduates.
Guided by President Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the School fully implements the national education policy emphasizing the holistic development of students in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor-related aspects. Responding proactively to national strategic priorities and regional socio-economic development needs, the School is committed to cultivating innovative foreign language talents who embody ethnic-rootedness, regional relevance, and global competence. Over the past six decades, the School has achieved remarkable success in talent cultivation, teaching excellence, academic research, and community engagement.
Academic Excellence and Disciplinary Strength
The School has a robust academic infrastructure, including:
? A Ph.D. program in Foreign Languages and Literature (First-Level Discipline);
? A Master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literature (First-Level Discipline);
? Two professional Master’s degree programs; and
? Three undergraduate programs.
Notably, the Ph.D. program in Foreign Languages and Literature is the only doctoral program in this field among all universities dedicated to ethnic minority education nationwide and among higher education institutions in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It has also been designated as Guangxi Top-Tier Discipline and a Provincial Characteristic Discipline.
The undergraduate programs in English Language and Literature and Translation have been recognized as National Top-Tier Undergraduate Programs. The French Language and Literature program is a Provincial Top-Tier Undergraduate Program.
Two courses, English Literature and Computer-Aided Translation, have been awarded “Guangxi Offline Top-Tier Courses.” In 2025, the Translation program was included in the Guangxi “AI-Future Digital Innovation Talent Development Program,” underscoring its forward-looking vision. According to the 2025 Best Chinese Discipline Ranking by Shanghai Ranking, the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature ranks 89th nationally.
Faculty: A Diverse, Highly Qualified Team
The School currently has 96 full-time teaching staff and 15 administrative and support personnel. Among the faculty members, 31 hold senior academic titles, 30 possess doctoral degrees, and 15 are pursuing PhDs; 7 serve as doctoral supervisors, and 25 as master’s supervisors. Two are recognized as New Century Outstanding Talents or Provincial High-Level Talents, and two are selected under the Guangxi “Thousand Young and Middle-aged Backbone Talents” Project. The majority have international academic experience through overseas study or visiting scholar appointments. Each language program routinely employs 2–3 native-speaking foreign teachers annually. In recent years, the faculty have earned 8 provincial-or ministerial-level teaching awards, and 20 individuals have received university-level honors such as Outstanding Teacher or Advanced Individual in Holistic Education (Sanquan Yu Ren).
Research: Rigorous, Impactful, and Interdisciplinary
Aligned with 麻豆原创’s core mission—ethnic-rootedness, regional relevance, and global competence—the School has developed stable and distinctive research clusters, especially in: English and American literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and Translation Studies.
Recent achievements include 47 research projects funded at various levels (including 4 national-level and 12 provincial/ministerial-level projects); 243 scholarly publications, with 72 indexed in prestigious databases (SSCI, SCI, EI, CSSCI); 123 books published (including monographs and translated works); and 6 provincial-or ministerial-level research awards.
The School serves as the headquarters for three key academic associations: (1) China Association for Studies of Translation History, (2) China Association for Poetry Studies, both affiliated with the China Association for Compartive Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC), and (3) Translators’ Association of Guangxi.
Cutting-Edge Teaching Facilities and Resources
The School maintains modern, well-equipped teaching and research facilities—among the most advanced in Guangxi’s higher education sector. Our China-ASEAN Language and Digital Information Services Collaborative Innovation Experimental Teaching Center is included in the latest round of Guangxi experimental teaching center development initiatives.
The School operates 14 specialized labs, including multimedia language laboratories, simultaneous interpreting labs, translation labs, virtual-scenario speaking and interpreting practice rooms, cross-border e-commerce training labs, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI application labs, and the Three Styles of Calligraphy and Sketching Lab. The total value of teaching and research equipment amounts to approximately RMB 20 million yuan.
Regarding library and information resources, the School houses extensive, specialized collections, including 40,850 distinct titles, totaling 91,642 volumes (in Chinese and foreign languages); 45 print journal subscriptions; over 1.6 million electronic books; and 110 electronic journal titles. Special collections include Dedicated English and French Resource Centers and the Xie Tianzhen Center for Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, established through a generous donation from Professor Xie Tianzhen, a renowned translation theorist and founder of Translation Studies in China. Additionally, the School maintains 31 off-campus practice and internship bases, fostering close industry-academia collaboration.
Teaching Quality: Continuous Improvement and Student Success
Upholding the principle of “Student-Centered Undergraduate Education”, the School actively advances pedagogical innovation to cultivate competent foreign language professionals.
Recent accomplishments include two Guangxi Teaching Achievement Prizes. Students have consistently excelled in national competitions. For instance, in the 2025 FLTRP–CICG National College Foreign Language Competency Contest (“Understanding Contemporary China” category), Wang Yijie won the National Championship in Written Translation; Guo Xuyi secured the Silver Award in English Comprehensive Skills; and Zhou Zihan received the Bronze Award in English Short Video Production.
Graduate school admission rates continue to rise. The employment rate for graduates remains consistently above 90% over multiple years. The School has repeatedly been honored as the university’s Outstanding Employment Promotion Unit.
Additionally, approximately 300 student volunteers provide translation and language services for the China-ASEAN Expo each year, earning widespread recognition from organizers and the public.
International Engagement: Broad and Strategic Partnerships
The School actively fosters global academic exchange and cooperation. Key partners include Université de La Rochelle (France), Swansea University (UK), the University of Melbourne (Australia), and multiple universities and research institutes across Southeast Asia. Through these partnerships, the School recruits and jointly supervises international undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students through diverse collaborative frameworks.
